The recent years have seen a growing demand for soy candles. These candles are made from soy wax, which contains hydrogenated soybean oil as its chief ingredient. Soy wax was developed in 1992 by an American candle-maker named Michael Richards. He was looking for a cheaper material that could be used in place of beeswax for making candles. Using a blend of vegetable oils, he succeeded in creating an alternative to beeswax. Soy candles were first launched in the market in 1995 by the Body Shop chain of stores. Being inexpensive and stylish, they gradually gained popularity. Soy candles quickly found their way to the supermarkets and specialty stores across the nation.
Soy candles have many more advantages over paraffin candles. They burn 35 to 50 percent longer. Their low melting point assures slower and cooler burning, which helps in the better distribution of fragrance. These candles produce less soot, making them a healthier option. Moreover, these candles do not increase the carbon dioxide level of the atmosphere, making them more attractive to environmentally conscious people. Compared to paraffin candles, their non-toxic nature causes fewer allergies. They are therefore perceived as more child- and animal-friendly. Another major factor in the popularity of soy candles is the relative ease with which their spills can be cleaned. While paraffin wax is difficult to remove from furniture or clothes, soy wax can be easily cleaned using hot, soapy water.

In the countryside , in gardens and in flowers creations, green is a color that is always with us. Even in deepest winter, there are evergreens to evoke memories of summer! It is rare for there to be no green leaves at all in an arrangement, so it is fortunate that green works easily with all other colors. Used as a foil to other colored flowers, green does an excellent job of showing them off to their best advantage.
Restful, serene, and easy on the eye, green is also beautiful when it is used on its own: there are many leaves in differenet shades of green, as well as a few flowers, and all of these have their own unique shape and textures.

Lying between green and yellow on the color wheel, lime-green (chartreuse) has a very special property- it has the ability to lift every other color in the spectrum and in your bouquet. Be it with reds, pinks, oranges, yellows, or blues, the addtion of luminious, lime-green flowers immediately brings other colors in the arrangement to life, giving them a fresh clarity and sparkle.
The best lime-green flowers… Chrysanthemum, Bells of Ireland, Emerald Rose, Kermit Buttons, Cymbidium Orchid are just a few.

These cheerful flowers, of which the daffodil is the most well known, bloom naturally out-of-doors from late winter to late spring. It is in spring (when one of the most uplifting sights in nature is their golden yellow drifts against fresh green grass) that daffodils seems most appropriate for the home. The predominant colors are yellow and gold, but there are whites, creams, oranges.
Many daffodils have intense, fresh, sweet perfumes. Once cut, the daffodil last best in a cool place. Always use flower food or a few drops of bleach in the water to prevent the stems from becoming slimy. Typically the daffodil will last less than a week.

Orchids are the most exotic of flowers, the waxy texture of their petals making them strangely appealing. They come in huge range of colors and sizes, and because there are quite a few earthy colored varieties, they work equally well in both rustic and elegant displays.
Cymbidium is the most commonly grown orchid – both as a house plant and for cut flowers, followed by Dendrobium. The Phalaenopsis orchid must be the most elegant orchid: flowers in white, pinks, yellow, and green, looking like exotic, hovering moths, are produced on long arching stems
Most orchids are long lasting, particularly if left to flower on the growing plant. Orchid plants benefit from being moved to semi-shaded place in the garden for the summer and must be kept well watered.

When: Third Saturday in October
Now here is a day dedicated just for your sweetie. It exists as an opportunity for you to recognize that sweet and special someone. It doesn’t matter who that person is, or what their relation to you. They just have to be “sweet” in order to get a little recognition.
Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland, Ohio philanthropist and candy company employee started Sweetest Day. He wanted to bring happiness to orphans, shut-ins and under-privileged. His intent was to show these people that they were not forgotten. In 1922, he started this holiday by giving candy and small gifts. He often used movie stars to distribute the gifts.
The popularity of this holiday quickly spread. Today, is celebrated with loved ones and friends. However, we encourage you to follow the intent of the original holiday, and find ways to give flowers and small gifts to those in need.
When words are not enough of a recognition, perhaps you can send that special “sweetie” some flowers! Visit us at http://www.fortmyersfloraldesigns.com
